As we start to see snowdrops, crocus and other flowers bloom, it finally feels like we can start to climb out of hibernation and re-energise ourselves ready for Spring.

Mindfulness in nature

If you find yourself feeling anxious or stressed, a really good thing to do is practice mindfulness in nature.

This isn’t about long walks in woodlands (although they’re good too!), you can do it in your lunchbreak!

  • Step outside, whether that’s your garden, the office car park or your local park.
  • Take a deep breath, in through your nose, hold for a couple of seconds, then out through your nose. Repeat this 3 times.
  • Start walking slowly in the space you’re in. You may find it easier to do circles, or just follow a line.
  • Look at every plant, tree, weed or bush around you. Notice the colours, feel the texture and look at the shapes.
  • If your mind wanders, try to focus on what you’re looking at, or just bring your attention back to your breath.

If you practise this exercise regularly, you’ll find that whenever you’re out and about you’ll start noticing more details, without thinking about it.
